Description

The progress made towards a theory to bring together the electromagnetic and weak forces together in one framework is reviewed. The crux of the approach is the idea that the fundamental laws of physics may respect symmetry principles not manifest in the present conditions of the Universe. Some of the ideas underlying current attempts to find a single unifying principle for all the forces of Nature, including gravity, and embracing the elementary forms of matter are outlined. (U.K.)
