Thorium(IV) complexes with schiff bases derived from 5-phenyl-azosalicylaldehyde

Description

A series of new Schiff base ligands were synthesized by condensation of 5-phenyl-azo-salicylaldehyde with aniline, o-aminophenol and o-toluidine. The complexes of the type ThCl4.L have been prepared in solid state by treating ThCl4.8H2O with ligands in alcohol medium and characterized by their elemental analysis, molar conductance, electronic and infrared spectral studies. The complexes are found to be nonelectrolytes in DMF. The infrared spectral studies suggest the coordination of C=N and N=N groups to the Th(IV) moiety and non-involvement of OH group in the reaction. Considering the nature of ligands and other spectral observations a polymeric structure for the complexes is proposed in which thorium has its coordination number six. (author)
