Effect of gamma irradiation on seed germination, growth and biochemical parameters of Flacourtia Montana Graham

  • 1. Department of Applied Botany, Mangalore University, Mangalagangotri (India)

Description

Flacourtia montana an endemic species of Western Ghat which is well known for its ethno-medicinal value was chosen for the study. Matured seeds collected from Beithangady region of Dakshina Kannada district were irradiated with different doses (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 Gy) of gamma radiation using 60Co gamma source at Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT). Effect of gamma radiation on growth and biochemical constituents were compared with that of control plants. An increase in germination percentage, speed and vigour index was observed at lower dosages, and the dose of 100 Gy was found to be more effective out of the selected doses as far as growth is concerned. Doses of 25 and 100 Gy showed 95 and 100% germination respectively but the germination was reduced at higher dosages. Total chlorophyll content at 10 Gy was found to be 19.56 mg/gfw while in control was 14 mg/gfw. Phenolic content was higher at 50 Gy and proline content at 150 Gy. Slight increase in carbohydrate content was observed in irradiated samples. Hence, lower doses of radiation treatment may be recommended to increase growth and phenolic content of plant F.montana.
