SMRs at the heart of many questions
Creators
Description
Whereas more than 70 projects are being developed, this article proposes an overview of the situation regarding the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the world: some are reduced versions of existing models, other are based on much more innovative concepts, but very few are being operated or under construction. It indicates the different implemented technologies for these reactors of less than 500 MW (PWR, BWR, HTGR, LMFR, and RSF). It outlines the great number of projects in the USA and mentions some of them belonging to different technologies. It evokes Russian and Chinese reactors which are already being operated, comments the French situation (after having been a leader with Astrid, France is staying apart with a choice of EPR, but some projects are emerging again). The article finally addresses issues and debates related to safety and costs, and also briefly questions the existence of markets for these reactors
