This report describes a method to transform actinide ions in the near surface environment to less-soluble, more thermodynamically stable phosphate mineral phases through the application of surface active organophosphorus complexants. These complexants are designed to decompose slowly in the environment to release phosphate. The complexant of choice is phytic acid
