Description

The HVEC-FN type tandem accelerator of the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest was twice, in 1977 and 1986, severly damaged by strong earthquakes with magnitudes on the Richter scale of 7.2 and 6.8, respectively. In order to protect the accelerator against any future similar seismic events, an antiseismical protection system was developed and tested. This paper describes this system together with other improvements to the machine. The antiseismic protection consists of a soft elastic suspension with springs and viscodampers for the accelerator tank and of 'mechanical fuses'. (orig.)
