Polarization and magnetic moment of the cascade minus hyperon
Description
The magnetic moment of the ω- hyperon has been measured to be -0.716 +- 0.040 nuclear magnetons by observing the precession of the ω- polarization vector in a magnetic field. The ω-'s were produced by 400 GeV protons at angles of +- 5 and +- 7.5 mr, and had momenta between 105 and 290 GeV/c. The charged particles from the ω- → #betta# π- and #betta# → p π- decays were detected in a multiwire proportional chamber spectrometer. Results are based on 192,110 events. The measured ω polarization is presented as a function of ω- momentum. The average polarization was -0.093 +- 0.007. The helicity of the decay #betta#'s was also measured, giving the value of α/sub #betta#/α/sub ω/ = -0.303 +- 0.004 +- 0.004
