CANDU moderator heat sink in severe accidents
Description
The presence of a cool, low pressure moderator system is a unique inherent safety feature of CANDU reactors. The moderator can act as a backup heat sink for severe accident scenarios such as a loss of coolant accident coincident with a total loss of emergency core coolant injection. Such severe accidents are considered in the deterministic safety analysis used in the licensing of CANDUs as well as those identified by plant specific probabilistic safety assessments. This paper presents a summary of the phenomena related to high temperature fuel channel behaviour, and the supporting research program. The analysis and experimental work has demonstrated that the heavy water moderator surrounding individual fuel channels is effective in removing decay heat for severe accident scenarios. (author)
