Fission Product Release Measurements in the Dragon Reactor Charge II
Description
During the irradiation of the second fuel charge in the Dragon Reactor, purge gas from 41 elements was analysed and the specific activity of a number of radioactive isotopes determined by γ-spectrometry. The results of these analyses, together with purge flow data on individual elements and power ratings, has enabled the fraction of generated fission products which escape into the purge gas to be calculated. In most cases very low release to birth ratios have been determined, with the exception of one experimental element designed to operate at temperatures likely to bring about particle failure. In this particular case a progressive change in release to birth ratio from 7 x 10-6 to 10-2 was observed. The level of activity of Xe-133, Kr-85m and Xe-135, in the primary coolant was determined regularly throughout the life of this charge at various levels of purge and by-pass purification rates. Measurement of the total activity in the primary coolant was also made on a regular basis by means of an installed ion chamber. (author)
