Correlation between the oxidation potentials of rare earths in aqueous solutions and chloride melts

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

Analysis of literature and obtained experimental data shows, that differences of oxidation potentials of M3+/M2+ pairs of two f-elements in chloride melts and some other solvents (alcohols, NH3liq, acetonitrile) coincide with differences of standard oxidation potentials of M3+/M2+ pairs of the same elements in aqueous solutions. The relationship between solubility of f-element metal in its molten trichloride and the values of standard oxidation potentials of M3+/M2+ and M3+/M0 pairs for aqueous solutions was established. The established correlations enabled to construct the common scale of standard oxidation potentials of M3+/M2+ pairs of f-elements and calculate solubilities of f-element metals in their molten trichlorides
