Stability of trivalent plutonium nitrate in tributyl phosphate
Description
Plutonium (III) oxidation by nitric acid, or its reduced products, in tributyl phosphate during the plutonium reducing reextraction step of spent fuel reprocessing by the Purex process. A bibliographic review of plutonium chemistry in aqueous and organic solutions (Pu III and Pu IV absorption spectra in nitric and perchloric media) and of Pu III oxidation by nitrous compounds in aqueous and organic media is presented. The experimental part is a kinetic study in T BP of the following reactions: (i) Plutonium III oxidation by nitrous acid (in perchloric medium to avoid interference of nitrate ions); (ii) plutonium III oxidation by nitric acid with paranitro-aniline as anti-nitrous agent; (iii) plutonium III oxidation by nitric acid without anti-nitrous agent: this is the global reaction of plutonium reoxidation in the reprocessing. Auto-catalysis by nitrous acid is evidenced in this study

On etudie en milieu phosphate de tributyle (TBP) les reactions d'oxydation du plutonium (III) par l'acide nitrique et ses especes reduites lors de l'etape de reextraction reductrice du plutonium du retraitement des combustibles nucleaires irradies (procede PUREX). La partie bibliographique est une etude de la chimie du plutonium en solutions aqueuse et organique (especes et spectres d'absorption du Pu(III) et du Pu(IV) en milieu nitrique et perchlorique) et de l'oxydation du plutonium (III) par les composes nitres en milieux aqueux et organiques (TBP). La partie experimentale, est une etude cinetique en milieu TBP des reactions suivantes: . Oxydation du plutonium (III) par l'acide nitreux (en milieu perchlorique afin d'eviter l'influence des ions nitrates); . Oxydation du plutonium (III) par l'acide nitrique en presence d'un agent anti-nitreux, la p.nitroaniline; . Oxydation du plutonium (III) par l'acide nitrique sans agent anti-nitreux; cette reaction est consideree comme la reaction globale de reoxydation du plutonium (III) ayant lieu dans le procede du retraitement.
