Present status and prospect of SPring-8 utilization

Description

In this paper, following remarkable scientific results seen from the SPring-8 are described. 1. The measurement of deformation of the storage ring by the tidal force. The storage ring was constructed at very high spatial precision. Upon movement of the sun and the moon, storage ring deforms a few tens microns. 2. Geophysical studies. The discontinuity of earthquake wave at 660 km from the surface has been studied and the result suggested a substantial change of present knowledge. 3. Structural biology studies. The structural biology is a major subject at the third-generation facility. SPring-8 accelerates structure analysis and gives an electron density in a day. 4. Imaging technique by the use of parallel beam. The low emittance of the SPring-8 undulator makes a imaging technique using refraction of X-rays, Opening up a imaging technique with low dosage. 5. Behavior of mercury atoms at the super critical state. Liquid mercury exhibits metal-insulator transition in super critical state, in which atoms form a cluster instead of uniform dilution in its state. (J.P.N.)
