Radiation exposure of the population by the discharge of waste water containing 131I into surface waters

Description

There was determined the radiation exposure caused by the discharge of waste water containing 131I from the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Giessen (about 8 Ci/Y 131I for thyroid therapy) into the Lahn river, considering local aspects. The dose limits set by sect. 45 of the Ordinance on Radiological Protection are not reached by far, even if the discharge of about the same amounts of activity is assumed upstream (Marburg). Discharges occurring dowstream with similar concentrations of 131I will also leave the situation more or less unchanged, because the calculations are based on extremely pessimistic assumptions for exposures of individuals. Abstract (German)

Die Strahlenexposition durch die Einleitung von J-131-haltigem Abwasser in die Lahn aus der Nuklearmedizinischen Abteilung in Giessen (ca. 8 Ci/a J-131 zur Schilddruesentherapie) unter Beruecksichtigung lokaler Gegebenheiten wurde bestimmt. Dosisgrenzwerte nach Paragraph 45 StrlSchV werden dabei bei weitem nicht erreicht, selbst dann nicht, wenn angenommen wird, dass lahnaufwaerts (Marburg) Aktivitaeten in etwa gleicher Menge eingeleitet werden. Auch lahnabwaerts erfolgende Einleitungen von J-131 in aehnlichen Konzentrationen aendern die beschriebene Situation nicht merklich, da die Rechnungen auf extrem pessimistischen Annahmen fuer eine Exposition von Einzelpersonen beruhen.
