On site determination of sulfur concentrations of sedimentary rock by XRF analysis

Description

Determination of sulfur concentrations of sedimentary rocks is very important for tunnel constructions, because construction waste soils containing high sulfur may lead acid water pollution. We determined X-ray intensities of S Kα of certified standards for sediments and sedimentary rocks. The ratios of X-ray intensity of S Kα to its sulfur concentration for JMS-1 and JMS-2 (AIST marine sediment standards) are significantly higher than JSd-2 (AIST river sediment standard obtained from the downstream of the a mining site) containing sulfide minerals, suggesting that the ratio of X-ray intensity of S Kα to its sulfur concentration is controlled by the sulfur bearing minerals in these standards. The ratios of X-ray intensities of S Kα to their sulfur concentrations for the in-house standard obtained by mixing kaolinite and sulfate (CaSO4) powders are significantly higher than those of the in-house standards obtained by mixing of kaolinite and sulfide minerals (FeS2, ZnS) powders. These differences may be caused by the higher X-ray absorptions of S Kα in sulfide than sulfate. (author)

Abstract (Japanese)

堆積岩に硫黄が多く含まれると酸性水発生の原因となるため,トンネル工事では堆積岩中の硫黄含有量を把握することは重要である.我々は堆積物および堆積岩標準試料の硫黄の特性X線(S Kα)の強度と硫黄含有量の比を測定した結果,産業技術総合研究所の海底堆積物標準試料(JMS-1,JMS-2)の比が河川堆積物(JSd-2)に比べて大きな値になることを明らかにした.硫酸塩鉱物(CaSO4)と硫化鉱物(FeS2,ZnS)の粉末をカオリナイトに混ぜて,これらの混合物試料のS Kαの強度と硫黄含有量の比を測定した結果,硫酸塩鉱物とカオリナイトの混合物試料のS Kαの強度と硫黄含有量の比は,硫化鉱物とカオリナイトの混合物試料の比よりも大きな値になることが判明した.こうした比の違いは,硫化鉱物が硫酸塩鉱物に比べてS Kαを吸収してしまうことに起因すると考えられる.(著者)
