Description
This article summarises the debate between British Nuclear Fuels and protest groups concerning the commercial viability of the THORP reprocessing plant at Sellafield, in view of the escalating cost of building and running it since planning permission was applied for in 1977 to completion in 1992. Doubts are thrown on the necessity for the plant in view of the reduction in the 'fast breeder' programme and in the need for fast breeder fuel. The hazards to the environment are also discussed.
