Quasars aligned across NGC 3384

Description
A number of ultraviolet-excess stellar objects were found in the vicinity of the triple system of galaxies NGC 3379/84/89. Systematic search of an area with radius 30' (0.77 deg2) around these galaxies yields eight quasars aligned across NGC 3384. Six of these quasars appear to have very similar redshifts, between z=1.11 and z=1.28. The two quasars closest to NGC 3384 are aligned exactly across its high-surface-brightness nucleus and have redshifts z=1.107 and z=1.111. Ultraviolet-excess objects have been cataloged by G. d. T. on the entire 10 inch x 10 inch (25.4 cm x 25.4 cm) Palomar Schmidt plate on which the original NGC 3384 association was seen. The total area is 20.9 deg2, and 422 ultraviolet objects were found. All candidates in the 0.77 deg2 field were observed spectroscopically; when the numbers of stars and quasars found there wereextrapolated to the whole plate, a quasar density of 7 +- 4 deg-2 down to B=20 mag was derived. This value agrees well with the Sandage and Luyten value of 10 and the Setti and Woltjer value of 8.5 deg-2 to the same magnitude limit
