Qualitative ultrasound training: defining the learning curve

Highlights: • Effective ultrasound training requires accurate qualitative assessment of trainee competence. • Kappa/weighted kappa analysis can be used to define the trainee learning curve and determine final competence. • Cumulative sum analysis is a sensitive prospective method of identifying the struggling trainee. • Ultrasound trainees demonstrate a sigmoid learning curve, following a success-based paradigm. • Trainees require at least 70 groin scans and 80 shoulder scans to become competent performing musculoskeletal ultrasound. -- Abstract: To assess the developing competence of two trainees learning groin and shoulder ultrasound when compared to an expert practitioner.
