Description

A phoswich detector with a first stage consisting of a scintillating gas proportional counter has been constructed and tested. Good identification of heavy ions of charge 4 < Z < 20 has been obtained. This type of detector provides an improvement with respect to conventional phoswiches (plastic-CsI(TI)), especially with respect to lower energy thresholds. It therefore appears promising as a standard detection unit of a 4π hodoscope for heavy ions. (orig.)
