Papaverine decreases the efflux fo 42K in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle

Description

The effects of papaverine on resting potential and efflux of 42K were investigated in guinea-pig left atria. Papaverine significantly reduced the potassium efflux in beating preparations. In resting preparations, the efflux of potassium was only slightly affected. However, the resting potential was significantly reduced by papaverine by about 5 mV. The effect of papaverine on the potassium conductance may be related to the positive inotropic effect of the drug in atrial heart muscle, since the duration of the action potential is prolonged and possibly therefore the calcium entry during excitation improved. Abstract (German)

Die Wirkung von Papaverin auf das Ruhepotential und den Herzabfluss von 42K wurde im linken Herzvorhof von Meerschweinchen untersucht. Papaverin bewirkte eine signifikante Verringerung des Kaliumabflusses in Herzschlagpraeparaten. Bei Ruhepraeparaten wurde der Kaliumabfluss nur wenig beeinflusst. Allerdings wurde das Ruhepotential durch Papaverin signifikant um ca. 5 mV verringert. Der Einfluss von Papaverin auf die Kaliumleitung koennte mit der positiven inotropen Wirkung dieses Mittels im Herzvorhofmuskel im Zusammenhang stehen, da die Dauer des Aktionspotential verlaengert und damit moeglicherweise der Calciumzufluss bei Belastung erhoeht.
