Soller collimators for small angle neutron scattering
Description
The neutron beam transmitted through the small angle diffractometer (SAD) instrument at IPNS showed 'wings' about the main beam which interfered with the low-Q scattering data. General considerations of reflection theory and results from a Monte Carlo simulation suggested these wings were due to specular reflection of neutrons from the absorbing materials on the surfaces of the collimator blades. The roughness of the surface was found to be important New Collimators for SAD were made with a much rough 10B-binder surface coating on the blades and these were a significant improvement on the original collimators.
