Globular amphiphiles: Membrane forming hexakisadducts of fullerene C60

Description
The synthesis, membrane and vesicle formation of a new class of artificial amphiphilic lipids is reported. These lipids have a globular architecture, the spherical C60 been used as a structure determining tecton. In aqueous solution they form unilamellar spherical vesicles, the properties of which were studied by cryo-TEM recording. Monolayers at the air water interface were investigated at different lateral pressures by a combination of film balance techniques, neutron reflection (NR) and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS)
