Restoring Bruce A will save Ontario $2 billion

Description
Restoration of Bruce A Nuclear Generating Station requires the expenditure of about $2 billion on replacing pressure tubes, some steam generators, and other equipment. The main problem with the pressure tubes is delayed hydrogen cracking, which can be largely obviated by repositioning the garter springs and by monitoring hydriding before cracking occurs. Stress corrosion cracking of the steam generators can be reduced by better control of water chemistry. Control computers, the boiler feed pumps and heat exchangers, and the water treatment plant, will all need to be replaced. It is estimated that the repairs would save Ontario Hydro $2 billion, but at the time of writing no decision had been taken whether to proceed with the program
