Nuclear energy in Usa: very good results, expected revival, but also uncertainty.

In 2000 Nuclear energy comforted its competitiveness in Usa by having the lowest production cost (involving operating costs, maintenance costs and fuel costs): 1.74 cent/kWh. A sixth unit has received a renewal of its license to operate till its 60. anniversary. In mid 2001 NRC (nuclear regulatory commission) was dealing with 14 similar demands for extending service life. Numerous nuclear power plants have increased by several % the amount of power they deliver. These increases have been possible by the reduction of inaccuracies on the measurement of reactor power and by the improvement of turbine-alternator equipment. This policy of allowing power increasing began in 1977 and since then has produced a 2500 MW extra. In may 2001 President Bush presented his energy policy and his willingness to develop nuclear energy might open a new era for this kind of energy. The terrorist attacks of September 2001 have brought a great uncertainty on the evolution of the American economy, but might have made American politicians more aware of the importance of the future energetic independence of their country.
