Simulation of flow induced thermal stratification in feedwater piping

Creators

Description

Flow Induced Thermal Stratification (FITS) occurs within horizontal pipes into which water is introduced at low flows and significantly different temperature than the water already in the pipe. A useful parameter for predicting the onset of FITS is the Richardson Number (Ri). Conditions producing FITS are indicated by Ri > 1.0. A computer model of a feedwater inlet pipe, for which low flow thermocouple data is available, was developed and analyzed with the GOTHIC code. Results of the analysis demonstrate reasonable agreement with the thermocouple data
