A proposed radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF

  • 1. Foster Radiation Lab., Dept. of Physics, McGill Univ., Montreal, PQ H3A 2B2

Description

A proposal has been made for the installation of a radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF. The first stage of this system is an on-line isotope separator, designed with a QQD mirror pair, and a high-resolution dipole. With this system, two ion beams - one with high resolution, the other with high intensity - can be simultaneously extracted and led to separate experimental halls. A post-accelerator can be coupled to the high-intensity beam line, yielding output energies approximately 1.5 meV/A, and output intensities approximately 10/sup 10/ ions/s for ions with A ≤ 60. Such a combination would have unique capabilities in nuclear physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter studies. A description of the main details of the proposal is presented here
