Description
Asymptotic behavior of proton-proton cross sections at energies above 104 GeV must at present be deduced from cosmic ray observations on nucleon-nucleus cross sections. Theoretical problems involved in such calculations are discussed. In particular, the role of diffractive processes is explored, and it is shown that corrections to nuclear scattering from such effects are likely to be energy independent even if the underlying proton-proton cross section increases indefinitely at very high energies.
