Comparative study of some electroanalytical techniques. Application to the determination of trace metallic cations

Description

A comparison is made between two methods often used in electroanalysis: anodic stripping voltammetry and pulse stripping voltammetry, associated to three kinds of electrodes, hanging mercury drop electrode, glassy carbon electrode, mercury film electrode on glassy carbon. The following fundamental aspects (sensitivity, reproducibility and selectivity) are compared. The particular importance of the mercury film electrode is shown during determination of metallic cations at low concentrations (about 10-8M), or during simultaneous determination of elements like lead and thallium for which difference between half-wave potentials in polarography is very small. The end of this study gives in a very practical way the determination of some heavy metals (Pb) at low concentrations in different electrolytes

Abstract (French)

On propose dans ce travail de comparer deux methodes d'utilisation courante en electroanalyse. Ces deux methodes sont: la chronoamperometrie lineaire de redissolution et la polarographie a impulsion de redissolution, associees a trois types caracteristiques d'electrodes: l'electrode a goutte pendante de mercure (E.G.P.M.), l'electrode de carbone vitreux (C.V.) l'electrode de carbone vitreux recouverte d'un film de mercure (E.F.M.). Ces comparaisons portent sur les aspects fondamentaux suivants: la sensibilite, la selectivite, la reproductibilite. Elles mettent en evidence l'interet particulier que peut presenter l'electrode film de mercure (E.F.M.) lors du dosage de traces de cations metalliques a des concentrations inferieures ou egales a 10-8M, ou lors du dosage simultane de couples tels que plomb-thallium dont les differences de potentiels de demi-vague polarographique sont tres faibles. La fin de cette etude est consacree de facon tres pratique a la realisation du dosage de certains metaux lourds (Pb) en faibles traces dans dicers electrolytes
