Present status of the waste management at Laguna Verde nuclear power plant
Description
Since July 1990, the Mexican Nuclear Power Station - Laguna Verde, unit I - is commercially in operation, unit II is under construction and is expected to start commercial operation in 1994.Both units have the necessary provisional installations for disposal of spent fuel and for law-level wastes. Special attention has been given to reach an integral waste management for the interim storage time as well as for long term storage, with emphasis on final disposal. This article summarizes the status of the waste management at Comision Federal de Eletricidad for disposal of spent fuel and high level wastes. In the first part the high-level waste, composed essentially by spent fuel and highly irradiated components (neutron detectors and control rods) is discussed. Comments about the low-level wastes, composed of dry actives (paper, gloves, clothing) and solid wastes (chemical concentrates, mud and resumes are in the second part.
