Acute mitral insufficiency due to chord rupture in a COVID-19 patient: Case report

The present study reports the case of a male patient, without any previous comorbidity that developed a clinical condition of acute Mitral Valve Insufficiency with regurgitation while hospitalized with the diagnosis of COVID-19. During the permanency in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) he presented a heart dysfunction that led to the investigation of this clinical repercussion. The patient showed a lesion on the mitral apparatus demonstrated by echocardiography, and the rupture of the Chordae Tendineae (component A2) which justified the Mitral Valve Insufficiency. After the period of hospitalization and clinical recuperation of the complications associated to COVID-19, the patient underwent a surgical valve repair procedure. Considering the potential for systemic aggression of this disease, it was evident the importance of the investigation of the cardiovascular system in patients infected by the coronavirus, since important changes may exist and if not treated in time, they can worsen the prognosis and increase mortality from this disease.
