Chemical decontamination of the auxiliary liquid wastes from a PWR nuclear power station

Description

A chemical decontamination process has been perfected to ensure the treatment of aerated liquid radioactive wastes arising from facilities used in nuclear pressurized water reactors. Based on chemical precipitation of various reagents: barium sulphate, nickel ferrocyanide, ferric hydroxyde, the process is conducted at a final pH set between 8 and 10. Applied to liquid radioactive wastes produced by the nuclear power station of Chooz, this process has shown a very high efficiency: the specific activity for each of the radionuclides present in the effluent treated is lowered below the MPC for the population. With agreement of SENA (Societe d'Energie Nucleaire des Ardennes), the owner of the Chooz station, a long duration experimentation is now conducted at Chooz

Abstract (French)

Un procede de decontamination par precipitation chimique des effluents de servitudes des centrales electronucleaires de la filiere a eau legere a ete mis au point en laboratoire et teste en continu sur une installation pilote. Ce procede comprend une precipitation de sulfate de baryum, de ferrocyanure de nickel et d'hydroxyde ferrique, le pH final etant compris entre 8 et 10. Sur un effluent de la centrale de Chooz, l'efficacite d'un tel traitement permet de ramener l'activite de ces effluents au niveau de la CMAP pour les divers radioelements. Avec l'accord de la SENA un essai pilote de longue duree est en cours a Chooz
