Self-induced sloshing caused by upward plane jet impinging on free surface
Description
A new self-induced sloshing was recently discovered in a rectangular tank having a submerged plane jet. The upward jet entered the tank from a bottom-centered inlet and impinged vertically on a free surface. At a certain water depth and inlet velocity condition, a first-mode sloshing was observed. The frequency of oscillation was nearly equal to an eigenvalue of fluid without a steady circulating flow in the tank. In order to investigate the governing parameters of the oscillation, the tank geometries were systematically changed. The time required for fluctuation to travel from the inlet to the free surface was found to be one of the most important parameters. The sloshing growth mechanism is considered to be strongly related to the traveling time of the jet fluctuation. (author)
