Plan for utilization and research of ion beam in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute

Description
In the Takasaki Laboratory of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, ion irradiation facilities have been constructed and improved which are planned to be used for various research and development activities. Such activities currently under plan are described in the present report. The planned activities include research and development of space environmental materials (semiconductor devices, organic materials such as carbon-reinforced plastics, etc.), research and development of materials for nuclear fusion reactor (simulation of material deterioration due to high-energy neutrons), research in biotechnology (mutation induced by ion beam, techniques for cell processing), and research on new functional materials (atomic- or molecular-level structure control). The following four ion accelerators are expected to be installed in the laboratory: high-energy ion irradiation system (AVF cyclotron), medium-energy heavy-ion irradiation system (tandem type). medium-energy light-ion irradiation system (Van de Graaff type) and low-energy ion irradiation system (for ion implantation).
