ITEP accelerator reconstruction

Description
The ITEP proton synchrotron is under reconstruction into a proton-heavy ion accelerating complex, which is able to accelerate completely and incompletely stripped ions of all elements of the periodic table. After the first reconstruction stage the limiting energy of accelerated light ions is about 4 GeV/n, and that of heavy ions - about 1 GeV/n. After the second reconstruction stage the heavy ion energy will reach 3 GeV/c. Further it is planned to construct a superconducting accelerator designed for 30-40 GeV energy of protons. A magnetic system of one more confinement ring is being assembled now in the ring room of the proton synchrotron. 3 refs.; 9 figs
