Venus-II dual-core zero power reactor

  • 1. Division of Reactor Engineering Technology Research, China Institute of Atomic Energy, Beijing (China)

Description

Venus-II is a dual-core zero power reactor aiming on the fundamental research and engineering design validation of new advanced nuclear energy systems in China. Venus-II has two cores, the water core mainly focuses on principle validating experimental research in thermal neutron environment, while the lead core building the special material and neutron energy environments for lead based reactor, focuses on neutron physics characteristic experimental research for advanced nuclear energy systems such as heavy metal coolant reactor and accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS). Two cores in Venus-II are controlled and measured by one instrument and control system, and each core has multiply passive safety shut-down systems leading to high inherent safety. Multiply series of benchmark critical experiment results were obtained from Venus-II, which will support the fundamental research and engineering design validation of new advanced nuclear energy systems in China.
