Some regularities of hydrogen embrittlement in structural steels

Description
A consideration is given to the influence of low temperature treatment of low alloy structural steel 34KhN3M on its plasticity at room temperature. Tensile test specimens quenched from the temperature of 850 deg C were electrolytically hydrogenated and then exposed to low temperatures in the range of 0 to -196 deg C for 30 min. Tensile tests showed that steel cooling down to sub-zero temperatures results in a decrease of steel plasticity due to hydrogen precipitation at grain boundaries and dislocations under deformation. DC thermoelectric treatment of hydrogenated steel as well as elevated concentrations of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution improves the plasticity. 11 refs., 3 figs
