Formation of burn in fusion welding of sheets

Description
The effect of gaps in the butt weld, of the arc pressure and the bath metal weigth on formation of burn-throughs in thin plates fusion welding has been studied. The plates made of VT20 titanium alloy and 1Kh18N9T steel were welded by direct polarity continuous current in argon by a non-fusing electrode. Two types of burn-throughs occurred by welding in the gaps, i.e. continuous and discrete. The plates being from 0.6 to 2 mm thick, for both metals the gaps at which burn-throughs appear proved essentially greater than those recommended in industry. Stability of the welding bath can be increased by fixing the edges being welded, by reducing the arc pressure and by making its distribution on the welding spot more even
