The cascade of 'SOS' events
- 1. Institut Rudjer Boskovic, Zagreb (Yugoslavia)
- 2. Faculty of Natural Sciences, Pristina, Yugoslavia
Description
The authors have studied the cascade of 'SOS' events induced in UV-irradiated Escherichia coli cells. All these events require the functional gene recA and proceed in a sequential and orderly way. In addition to some well-known 'SOS' processes, they show that the following post-UV events are also dependent on the gene recA: (i) inhibition of DNA synthesis; (ii) induction of the controlled DNA breakdown; and (iii) induction of cell death (measured as loss of the biological activity of the bacterial DNA).
