Radiation-induced oxygen interstitials in MgO

  • 1. Oklahoma State Univ., Stillwater (USA). Dept. of Physics

Description

Neutron irradiation of single crystals of MgO near 650C produces a series of three distinct yet similar ESR spectra arising from O2- molecules. The O2- molecules are formed when oxygen interstitials produced by the radiation combine with indigenous oxygen ions. It is proposed that magnesium vacancies act as the stabilising site for the O2- molecules. (author)
