Stress Concentrations Around Unreinforced Circular Holes in a Plate Under Unidirectional Stress. Dragon Project Report
Description
An approximate method of analysis of the stress concentrations and strain conditions around unreinforced circular holes in a plate under unidirectional stress is described in this paper. The perforated plate problem under either unidirectional or hydrostatic plane stress loading conditions is examined by an analogy, believed to be original. The method differs from previous classical mathematical approaches in that it avoids the complexity of bi-polar co-ordinates and instead studies the strain conditions at a finite boundary circumscribed around each opening. The results are given in the form of simple equations and some values of the more important parameters have been graphed. These results appear to correlate with previous mathematical solutions for the most important and highly stressed region. The method is directly applicable to more complex situations than the one described and to problems which cannot readily be solved by rigorous mathematics. (author)
