Iodine-129 and iodine-127 in the thyroids of deer from the eastern Poland

  • 1. Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection, Warsaw (Poland)

Description

The main goal of presented communication was estimating of the iodine-129 contamination of eastern regions of Poland after the accident in Chernobyl. The animals came from two forest inspectorates: Rudnik and Suprasl. The best way was to determine the iodine-129 and iodine-127 content in the thyroids of dee rs, because this gland accumulates the greatest amount of iodine. Content and ratio of both radionuclides were determined using radiochemical version of the neutron activation analysis (RNAA). Both content and isotopic ratio of iodine differ significantly in the mentioned populations of animals, as well as are different from the values found for the wildings living in the regions accounted to be non-contaminated during the Chernobyl accident. It can be explained only in terms of significant role of the accident in iodine contamination of the eastern Poland
