Status of the Livermore atomic tritium neutrino mass experiment

  • 1. Lawrence Livermore National Lab., CA (USA)

Description

We are constructing an experiment to determine the electron anti-neutrino mass with a precision of a few eV by measuring the shape of the tritium beta decay spectrum near the endpoint. Our apparatus will include a system to produce a gaseous atomic-tritium source, thereby giving us the best understood beta decay system. The magnetic toroidal field spectrometer will have a resolution of about 6 eV at 23 keV electron energy, and together with a low background counting system we will be sensitive to a neutrino mass greater than about 5 eV
