Comprehensive activation calculations of reference materials for long term reactor concepts

Description

A neutronic analysis was performed to assess the activation properties of materials used in two long term conceptual reactors, i.e. the dual coolant liquid lead (DCLL) and the TAURO concepts. Both use advanced structural materials which are under development in the European fusion technology programme. Neutron fluxes were calculated in reference positions in the first wall, breeding blanket and shield for both reactors, that have been assumed to have the same reactor parameters. Activation calculations were performed for several, candidate materials irradiated in the selected reference positions, with different impurity levels: pure materials, real materials as available now, and materials with reasonable reduction of impurities after the necessary R and D. A large amount of data were produced on activation properties of these materials in the different positions and reactors (activity, afterheat, contact, inhalation and ingestion dose, clearance index) from shutdown to 106 years of cooling time, with specification of dominant nuclides and production pathways.
