Description
In order to clarify the effect of electron interaction on the Peierls instability of one-dimensional system with half-filled band, a general description of the electron interaction is required with the screened Coulomb interaction. It is shown that the effect of electron interaction on Peierls instability qualitatively depends on the interaction range: For short-ranged interaction, the Peierls instability is reduced by electron interaction; whereas for longer-ranged interaction, it will be enhanced.
