Description

The Australian Atomic Energy Commission Research Establishment at Lucas Heights was relatively isolated when construction began in 1955. Since then there has been substantial urban development in the surrounding area with the prospect of further growth in the next decade. The choice of Lucas Heights for the HIFAR reactor is examined from the safety viewpoint. Hazards such as toxic materials and gaseous releases are of concern to local residents, however all effluents are discharged in accordance with levels set by State government authorities. The AAEC has allocated a substantial part of its resources to occupational health and safety
