Auger electron spectra of elements from silver (Z=47) to Xenon (Z=54)
Description
High resolution gas phase M4, 5N4, 5N4,5 Auger electron spectra of silver, cadmium, indium, tin, antimony, tellurium, iodine and xenon are studied. The spectra of elements solid in room temperature have been obtained from Ag, Cd, In, INCl, InCl3, SnCl2, Sb4 and Te2 high temperature vapours. The theoretical relative energies and intensities have been calculated in the mixed coupling scheme assuming that the atoms have closed shell electronic ground state structure, and compared with experimental results from closed shell atoms and molecules. The atomic spectra of Ag and In show more fine structure due to coupling of the final state holes produced by the Auger process to the partially filled outermost shell. These spectra have been analyzed with the aid of the optical data for the corresponding double ionized free ions. As the second part of the work the kinetic energy shifts between free atoms and their solid species are studied. The spectra of Ag, Cd, Sb and Te have been measured simultaneously in vapour and solid phases in identical experimental conditions in order to determine as accurately as possible the free atom-solid metal Auger shifts. The observed shift values are compared with the calculated extra-atomic relaxation energies from Hartree-Fock hole state calculation, from Shirley's model and from the thermochemical model
