Description

Environmental pollution problems are enhanced due to the disposal of radionuclides as pollutants in the biosphere both from man made and natural sources. Evaluation of the potential radiological impact of air borne releases of radioactive materials from these sources, coal fired thermal plants for example, entails a great need and importance. Coal contributes to the pollution hazard by production of particulate heavy metals besides gaseous and thermal pollutants. Coal has main radioactive impurities 226,228Ra, 235,238U, 228,230,232Th, 40K. The use of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD)s in estimation of uranium in coal is described.
