A profile of South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE and G) describes why the 47th ranking utility in size was selected as the top ranking US utility. Major achievements for 1985 include the successful formation of the holding company to manage the utility and 11 subsidiaries, completion of the V.C. Summer nuclear plant and inclusion of the plant in the rate base, formation of a subsidiary that allows the company to finance an oil-to-coal conversion, organization of a subsidiary to build a 129-mile fiber optic communications system, improved public/customer perception, a broad range of public service and customer-assistance programs, and an innovative approach towards marketing. The article describes the achievements and identifies several company officials for special recognition
