Creators

  • 1. Bose Institute, Calcutta (India). Dept. of Botany

Description

The rice varieties namely Chinsura Boro I and Chinsura Boro II were irradiated with different doses of X-rays, β-rays and γ-rays. The doses of X-rays ranged from 10 kR to 100 kR, the β-rays ranged from 5 μc to 30 μc/seed. The radioactive substances used as mutagen were P32 and S35. The seeds treated with γ-ray from CO60 ranged 10 kRads to 40 kRads. Nearly 30 mutants (S.292, S.309, S.316 etc.) were isolated and maintained from generation to generation. The mutated characters are awns, apiculus, kernel colour, hull colour, etc. The nature of inheritance of the mutated genes have been reported. (author). 9 refs., 3 tabs
