DIN EN ISO 8769:2023-09. Measurement of radioactivity - Alpha-, beta- and photon emitting radionuclides - Reference measurement standard specifications for the calibration of surface contamination monitors (ISO 8769:2020); German version EN ISO 8769:2022

Description

Radioactive contamination of surfaces can arise from spilling, spattering or leakage from open sources or from rupture or loss of integrity from enclosed sources. It can lead to the spread of contamination and loss of quality control and cause health problems. This document specifies, traceable to national measurement standards, characteristics of reference standards for radioactive surface contamination for the purpose of calibrating surface contamination monitors. The document applies to alpha emitters, beta emitters and photon emitters with maximum photon energies not greater than 1.5 MeV. The document also specifies the reference radiation levels preferred for calibrating surface contamination monitors. These reference radiations are realized as suitably characterized large surface sources and are specified, without exception, in units of surface emission rate and activity that are traceable to national standards. The document does not describe the procedures for using these reference standards for the calibration of surface contamination monitors. Such procedures are in DIN EN 60325 (VDE 0491-2-1) "Radiation protection measuring devices - alpha, beta and alpha/beta (beta energy > 60 keV) contamination measuring devices and monitors", DIN EN 62363 (VDE 0493-2 -4) "Radiation protection measuring devices - Portable surface contamination measuring devices and monitoring devices for photon radiation" and other standards with VDE classification VDE 0493-2-x. The following change was made compared to DIN ISO 8769 (VDE 0412-8769):2021-01: - the requirements were adopted as a European standard. This document replaces DIN ISO 8769:2021-01; VDE 0412-8769:2021-01. The following changes were made compared to DIN ISO 8769 (VDE 0412-8769):2021-01: a) the requirements were adopted as a European standard.
