Laser spectroscopy leads to quick results

Description
The process known as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is described. A laser beam vaporises a sample of the material to be analysed turning it to a plasma which can be measured quickly and very accurately in a spectrometer. The technique needs less than one millionth of a gramme for tangible results and can be carried out by means of a remote head and advanced optics. It was originally developed to identify and measure traces of copper and manganese in batches of control rods in the Sizewell A Magnox reactor during routine maintenance. It could equally well be used in other hazardous environments and confined spaces. (UK)
